Whenever I try to enable normal or extra visual effects, the system immediately and absolutely freezes, forcing me to restart via the power button on my computer. It works perfectly well with no visual effects, though.
I am using an ATI Radeon HD 3650 graphics card with the proprietary drivers installed from the Hardware Drivers manager.

I am running Intrepid Ibex

System Specs:

Dell Dimension 4600
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
ATI Radeon HD 3650

EDIT:

For some reason, now it tells me that Desktop effects could not be enabled. How am I supposed to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Try the compiz-check (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=799070) script, to see if detects anything extra.
