Hi, the live cd works fine, but when I try to install to HD it gets as far as the keayboard layout and hangs the moment I choose a keyboard. It also hangs if I leave it at default.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 from a DVD. I have verified that it is a good burn, reports no errors when checking for defects.

When selecting the option for installing in text mode, I get no errors, but then I only get the console and I don't know how to use it properly...(I'm not a Linux newbie but I am a very un-educated user, so treat me like a newbie by all means)

My computer is an IBM Thinkpad T22 900MHZ with 255MB RAM - yes it is actually 255MB, oddly enough. I have no problems at all installing Suse but I want Ubuntu...

Please can anyone help me? Thanks very much!

Hi and welcome, when having 255mb memory which is below the recommenced minimum. you may have better luck with the alternate cd, as it is a text based install.

Thanks, I didn't think one MB would make any difference. I'll give the alternate installation a go if I can find a DVD version of it (odd problem with my DVD-ROM, likes DVDs but not CDs...)

Unless anyone has any other ideas?

That's a good point, I really wanted xubuntu but I can't find a DVD image of it (must be DVD because of my DVD-ROM problem described above).

Unless there is a way of installing xubuntu from an external USB CD-ROM (which I can't boot from due to a limitation in the BIOS)?

Thanks for the help, please keep it coming =o)

If cds do not work then you should be able to make dvd iso. If no luck with xubuntu iso to dvd then try older vers., 7.10 ubuntu. Select alternate install. images here

If bios does not allow usb boot, then the usb cd probably will not help.
