I recently got a new 1TB drive and I want to install/upgrade Ubuntu on the new drive because it's faster. I don't want to loose all my programs, preferences, and other random data in the process though, and I have no clue how to do so.

Any ideas / nudges in the right direction would be great!

thanks

Are you saying you have a running system now with windows or another OS and you want to replace the existion hard drive?

Yeah, I currently have two 80 gig drives, one for just storage, and one with my current Ubuntu install. I'm trying to get the new drive, which is blank besides a failed partition attempt, to have a new Ubuntu install, and be able to keep my programs and files from the old 80 gig drive if that's possible.

Read this. At the very end there is a how to on cloning a drive with Ubuntu terminal.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/alternative-computing/linux-support/153653-cloning-ubuntu-drive-how.html

I have cloned drivew with Arconis Home 2009 with windows systems but have not tried Linux. It is supposed to work however. Take out the drive with data and put in the new drive and leave the one with the system on it in the computer. Clone the drive to the new 1T drive and take it out when you are done. Put the old data drive back in. The one thing I am not clear about is how you grub file is set up now. If sees and sets of the data drive as is, I would think that the cloned drive should act the same way. Maybe someone else on the forum has a better grasp on this.
