New-Buntu. Help with 8.10 login!

Alright, I JUST installed ubuntu 8.10 an hour ago, and as you can tell, I'm really new here. I'm happy that it installed and all, because I'm terrible with open-source software (Windows sucks though!). Problem is, on the login screen it asks for a username, which I wasn't aware that I made one, and password. I guessed on both and it seemed to accept it, but eh? Went to a tan-white screen with only the mouse pointer. So I'm waiting for it to load and I'm all "WTF?" :confused:. So now it's been 30 minutes on the screen just... There. I the pointer moves, I tried pressing random keys, but NOTHING. Just there. If you guys/girls can help me out, I'd be apreciated. THANKS!

I would suggest starting in recovery mode, and at the menu select xfix, once xfix is done select resume, this should get you back to the desktop.

BTW you set a username and password when you installed Ubuntu, remember them, because you will need them.
