Upgrade questions

I have some questions regarding Ubuntu. I have just ordered Ubuntu 8.04 or Intrepid. I have also seen that the new version of Ubuntu or Ubuntu 9 is to come up in two months. So I ask if the OS updates as the update comes in the computer or I have to burn a CD and install the OS. Or is there any problem if I don't upgrade my system?

Please help me with these questions. Im really a newbie at this.
