With the economy in ruin, now is a great opportunity to explore alternative ways of living. Factor e Farm (http://openfarmtech.org/index.php?title=Main_Page) is in process of building the world's first working prototype of a self-sufficient eco-village using open source technologies. As with software, open source allows us to bring costs down tremendously and utilize decentralized collaboration for problem solving.

Enabled by new communications technologies such as the Internet, the project aims to allow its prototype to be replicated around the world, ultimately empowering even the most dependent people on Earth to produce for themselves by freely sharing the knowledge and lowering the costs to absurdly low levels.

We have made great progress and have built an open source tractor and a machine that makes Compressed Earth Bricks from local soil, both of which undercut the cost of proprietary machines by orders of magnitude. Eventually, using open source tools like the multimachine, RepRap, metal casting, and a DIY torch table, we aim to reduce the cost of these machines to simply scrap metal + labor.

Come help us cast a new civilization via scrap metal!
