update notifications without actually upgrading

I'm running with the 8.04 dist. since it takes me some time to upgrade (because my hardware is not automatically recognized) I wish to use this distro until it will be necessary to upgrade.

however i want to get update notifications of some important softwares (especially octave), and I've noticed that they only release updates for the new distro.

how to still get updates for the important softw while not upgrading to the next distribution?

If you can not upgrade some software with synaptic try t ofind deb file somewhere else or compile that package.
