I know we all have various OS's that are just lying around on CD's cause we downloaded the .iso and played with them for a few days, then deleted everything in a blaze of rm -rf glory and got something else.

So, what operating systems do you use/how do you use them, Ubuntu Forums?
I'm talking about ones that you've got actively installed, and the computers you run them on.

Personal Computers:
-Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my lappy
-Winduz XP on my lappy for games (FALLOUT 3!!)
-Xubuntu on my sister's P3
-My dad is constantly between 8.04 and XP
-Various other old machines i don't use (windows 95, arch linux, DSM, Slackware, etc)

Servers (I've got buckets of them :) ) :
-Ubuntu 8.10 headless on desktop SAMBA/CUPS/NTP, just about anything server (lol at 500 mhz processor.. supafast)
-8.10 not-headless on 1'st laptop (runs the email systems)
-8.04 headless on 2'nd aging (12+ yrs) laptop (runs DHCP requests for the network, is also torrent slave)
-Debian of some unknown age on 3'rd laptop that does nothing
-Gentoo of about the same age as on 3'rd

Home Desktop: Vista (for the wife :)).

BTW your poll options are kind of odd. Relatively few people use Gentoo, Slackware or Knoppix compared to others like Fedora, OpenSuse or Mandriva. And Red Hat Linux doesn't really exist any more.

Apart from Ubuntu my favourite distro is Debian

This (new) laptop runs Ubuntu. However it also has Debian, Fedora, Gnewsense and Vista (which it came installed with) on it.
My desktop pc currently has Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and Gnewsense installed.
My two servers run Debian.
And my old laptop was running Ubuntu.

With Linux, you only need to have one primary partition. Grub is perfectly able to boot a Linux distribution that is installed in a logical partition. :D

Edit: Just to be on-topic, Gentoo is my favorite. (and is the only Linux distribution installed on my machine ;))

I've only tried FreeBSD, but I wish to test NetBSD someday as well. I found that I hate ports on a slow cpu. Again who knows what you might like better. A fellow Ubuntu Forums user, cardinals_fan (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=360925) prefer NetBSD.

I need a test machine. I suggest you try both just to get your feet wet :)

Since the Debian version of the Linux Kernel is often more efficient it takes a close second place; Knoppix (also Debian-based,) takes third.

I almost utterly despise Windows (especially Vista,) though I don't entirely dismiss it.

Not on the list is Damn Small Linux, which has helped me revitalize several old computers; First Place is nearly evenly divided between DSL and Ubuntu.

OpenSUSE was an unmitigated disaster on the hardware I'm using now, and the BSD kernel has issues after installation (keeps rebooting the system, instead of continuing boot.)

My machine only has Xubuntu installed and I'm sticking with it. I have the most experience solving problems in an Ubuntu OS. :P

There is an excellent community here to help those of us having OS issues. Try getting something like this from Redmond...LOL Right...

Ubuntu 8.04, as my primary OS.
Windows XP, as a fried partition that I should really just get rid of.
DOS (Through DOSBox): To play the greatest games of all time. Jazz Jackrabbit FTW!
Windows 3.1 (In DOSBox), to run my copy of the Original Math Blaster 2 and Myst.
Windows 95 (In DOSBox), to run Sonic CD.

Desktop #1 (Main): Since this is my gaming computer, it has Windows XP. I play to many games to not use Windows.
Desktop #2: My other PC if anything should happen to this one. Dual booted with XP and Ubuntu 8.10.
Desktop #3: CrunchBang Linux 8.10 and XP.
Laptop #1: Windows Vista dual booted with Linux Mint 5 Elyssa.
If only all these companies would produce their games for Linux.
What a world it would be :P

My desktop is running Arch and Ubuntu 8.10.

Right now Arch is main and Ubuntu is "if I break arch while learning"-backup :)

So I guess that would make arch my favorite non-ubuntu-system.

PCBSD comes a close second behind Ubuntu for me.

I only yesterday came across PCBSD. looks really interesting.
i myself just dualboot Ubuntu 8.10 and XP SP3. I'll wait two more releases then probably triple with OpenSolaris.

Last year I told my mum: 'I'll give OpenSolaris 2 more years of development then It'll probably be my main desktop' I've since become a Linux diehard :)
