lol now try opening some big file in Gimp and add a dozen layers, that was the first time I noticed a slow down

Well it looks fine at a glance, but I guess it depends on your processor.

Those are freshly opened. If you actually worked on all of them, the memory would definitely increase and performance would decrease.

The load is on the conky, I don't know what it means though
System load is a measure of how idle, or bogged down a machine is
under 1 means the system is not working at full capacity (CPU is idling) - you can do more stuff and not affect performance
1 means the system is at full working capacity
above 1 means the system is working over it's capacity, and some actions will be delayed / have reduced performance due to the high load
the 3 sets of load numbers indicate the load at 3 separate intervals

It's a good processor. It runs Ubuntu/Xp faster than my daughters 2.4 core2
duo runs Vista
