First of all, let me apologize for my noobness. I don't know much about operating systems. I just want linux because I hate vista.

Ok so here's the most detailed account of what I did:

First I partitioned 15 gb of my hard drive, and formatted it calling if F.

Then I downloaded ubuntu 8.10 and burned it to a cd using nero. As far as I know I burned the iso correctly.

I put the cd in, shut down the computer, and restarted it, and it runs from the cd.

I get the ubuntu screen, enter the language, and select install. It then goes to the screen with the bar at the bottom that scrolls and the bar gets hung up, and everything stops including the cd drive.

The same thing happens when i try to run from the cd or do a cd verification or whatever its called.

I also tried the wubi thing and parameters other than quiet spash-- and that didn't work either

Can anybody help me?
