which version should I install

I have a 256 MB RAM 1.6GHz Intel Celeron(M) CPU.
Whenever I reboot with ubuntu after selecting the languages and selecting option 2:- install ubuntu.
My computer hangs up just after showing the ubuntu wallpaper.
What should I do?

Download xubuntu alternate cd and install via it

Does that mean that I cannot install ubuntu on my laptop
