I'm on vacation in a hotel using wifi away from all my gear at home. I'm using a friends laptop with windows on it who i've convinced to give ubuntu a try. Problem is, he dropped his laptop a while back and snapped the cd tray off.

I do not have access to a usb stick out here. is there a way that I can install ubuntu to a seperate partition, or put the installer on a third partition, boot into that partition to install to a second?

Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/#Installation%20without%20a%20CD for some options.

I'd suggest considering use of Wubi to install "within Windows". I've done this and it worked well.
