ATI dual monitor issues (1900x1200 and 1200x1000)

I've fiddled around with the Catalyst Control Center to no avail, every time I activate Big Desktop the desktop area is locked to a resolution that is higher than my main (1900x1200) monitor can handle.

is there any way to force a change in the resolution or set up each display independantly?

I have a similar issue. I have laptop display with 1200x800 native and secondary LCD with 1400xsomething, proprietary ATI driver. Tried googling and all but could never find a way to configure resolution independently for each display in an extended desktop.

I really want to fix this and I'd change to open source driver if that'd help make it work. If anyone could help that'd be great.
