I just posted this:

The iPod is considered *the* player, so why not offer the best?

I'm on the lookout for a portable player. I'm really sad to say that an iPod is at present not an option for me. I think that is sad.

My problem is that
1. I'm picky regarding the quality of my audio files. (And I would think that Apple likes to have good quality?)
2. I don't care much for proprietary formats. It's not the way of the future.

The list of portable players that can play Ogg Vorbis (http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/PortablePlayers) is proof that it can easily be done.

So, why won't iPods utilise the power of Ogg? Ogg Vorbis is better, and it's free.

Check out: http://www.vorbis.com/
and give us a real option!

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Many requests may sway them, so let's do it everyone!

Is there a formal list that we can put our names on to encourage portable player companies to take advance of the great Ogg?

Well, Linux on the iPod (http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page) works great...It can even unlock new features not found on the original firmware (Videos on the Nano, for instance), it can play Doom (http://ipodlinux.org/Doom), Gameboy (http://ipodlinux.org/GB_Emulator), Chess (http://ipodlinux.org/TuxChess).... And of course, ogg vorbis ;)

Check Here (http://ipodlinux.org/FAQ) for more.

I know it works great... If you have a supported player. I want a big player. Like the 60 gig one. And when sound doesn't work, what good is it?

At one time companies DID offer players with Ogg support. Now, few if any support it. Why? You can't DRM it and make viable money. I don't think the open source community can sway the corporations in this arena. Apple sure as hell won't support any free formats because they have iTunes. That's where they make their money after the person has dropped part of their paycheck on an iPod.

Edit: Whoops. Looks like there ARE players that support Ogg:

Ive seen that some manufactures dont support it because it takes more CPU power to decode thus draining battery life faster.

I have a iRiver H340 though so no probs with .ogg here. ;)

H340 is not sold in Nordic countries anymore. And it isn't featured on iRiver Europe's web page either. The biggest HD-player (except pmp-versions which I don't want at all) from iRiver is now 20 gigs. Taking a step back evolution-wise...
I'm going to *try* to get my hands on an iAudio 60 gig instead :)

If your daring you can get a H320 and mod it with a 60gig drive now. :) Misticriver (http://www.misticriver.net/index.php) is a great source for iRiver info.

Would that work with H10, which is apparently the biggest hard drive player iRiver has left? <http://www.iriver.eu.com/harddisc_player.html?p_id=145&L=&view=features>

However I found the mighty iAudio from Cowon. <http://eng.iaudio.com/product/product_X5_spec.php> They are said to have 60 gigs as well. And they *officially* support Linux :)
Flac and ogg support too :)
