GQview (http://gqview.sourceforge.net/) is an excellent image viewer / browser.

It's quite fast, has lots of useful features and is pretty configurable. It's unfortunately not actively developed at the moment but it has offspring, Geeqie (http://geeqie.sourceforge.net/).

The latest GQview version is available in the repos.
