How can I install MythTV without dedicating my entire system to it?
I just want the app there to record TV with. Is that possible?

Yup, just install it. Your best bet will be to install mythbuntu control centre as it helps you install all the various bits and bobs to get mythtv up and running. Once that is done the system will just work as it always has, but as long as the computer is on (not even logged in, just on sitting at the login will do) the mythtv backend will be running away recording anything you want.

When you want to watch tv just start the frontend application and away you go.

You can also install just the frontend on other computers on your lan and watch tv there too, its really very clever.

Hope that helps

About the only difference between a dedicated myth box and what you want is that myth's frontend is started automatically on login.
