Graphics Driver

i go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers and i get 2 choices. NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 173), and NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 177)[recommended]. i went to activate the recommended one but i get the error "SystemError: Failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock" and the same thing happens when i try to activate the 173 version. what do i need to do to get this to work?

Do you have update manager, add/remove, or synaptic open? If you do, close any of them first before you install nvidia driver for your card.
