I researched about ubuntu and found that there are ways to get infected with "unwanted software".Since i did not hear of this before i clicked on the "you are the 9,999,999 visitor click to claim your prize" pop-up out of curiosity. It forwarded me to a free $1,000 walmart gift card site were i thinking im invincible(with ubuntu), type a false email to see what happens then it forwards me to a shipping information where of course I provided false info.it did not go through because i did not enter the required fields and i exited out.i was wondering if my computer would be damaged from this foolish action in anyway.I am especially worried about a key-logger(if those exist on Linux)getting my passwords & admin password. Also if they(hackers) can do anything with my ip(if they can get it on ubuntu).Sorry im a little paranoid because of my past experience with Winxp.I just got ubuntu(newbe) and understand that no AV or security is needed but if anyone has any advise on being safe on Linux it would be much appreciated.Any security tips are also welcome.Thank you!

and

Security is still a concern. Spyware/Adware/Virii aren't a concern, but intrusions and compromises are. Those links are good reading on it.

what do you mean by "compromises"?

In addition to those links , you need to secure your browser (as java script / flash / etc are cross platform).

Security compromises like firewall bypass, or turning your machine into a zombie for hacking/DOS attacks.

Any machine, regardless of OS can be compromised. Proper security starts with the practices of the user.

The most important thing is to always use long passwords for everything. Common password cracking libraries go up to 8 characters, so your passwords should always be 9 characters or longer.

I use 16 character semi pronounceable passwords.
