So I have ubuntu 6.10 64bit

I'm trying to upgrade to 8.04 64bit without losing the settings for my Raid array. Meaning I don't want to just install 8.04.

The website recommends I first upgrade to 7.04 then to 8.04.

The update manager sees 7.04 availably. I click upgrade. It starts but fails to fetch several things citing 404 not found errors.

I've downloaded 7.04.iso and mounted it and tried to upgrade from there. I can't figure out what to do after I've mounted it.

I thought maybe if I burn it to a cd and boot to it it'll have a way to upgrade. It doesn't. It wants to do a clean install.

help please

Well since no one responded...

I went ahead and just did a clean install of 8.04
It's doing it right now.

I wonder if when I set the raid back up if the data will still be there... I'd be great if it is. I have everything backed up anyway so nothing is lost.

You are correct - backup and perform a total reinstall.

I believe that 7.04 is no longer supported which is why you received the 404's.

And you really should give it about a day (24 hours) before bumping the thread.

Sometimes the harder or more obscure questions take a while to be answered.

And the fact that most of the community has gone to 8.10 or higher and probably just don't feel the need to answer.

Glad you got it going, though.

Keep us posted, someone may learn from your mistakes (or successes) later on.

well it installed...

I updated...

now it wont completely boot...

The Ubuntu loading screen comes up... when it should go to the login screen it instead just goes completely black... no flashing cursor or anything.

The screen does not go to sleep though... so the black screen is actively being sent to the display...

I guess something broke during the update and I'll have to reinstall again.

Well I'm installed.
rebuilding the raid array lost all the data.
I'm glad I have it all backed up.
