View Full Version : [ubuntu] Trying to burn a CD

February 25th, 2009, 08:11 PM
I have been trying to install ubuntu on an older machine that only has a CD-Rom drive. The firmware does not seem to support boot from a USB DVD drive.

Burning a 697Gb CDRom is problematic as the design capacity of CDRom is 650Gb. Apple refuses to do this and Windows has a patchy success rate.

My attempt to install the linixCNC distribution is currently hung up at 'checking file system'. So I try to install a standard distribution and that will not fit on the CD.

Suggestion - either cut the distribution down so that it does fit on a CD or tell people that they need a DVD reader to install.

Get the 700MB CD!

You'll have an Internet connection at the ready, right?

Start with the Ubuntu Barebones install CD (it's a tiny little 10MB D/L): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

From there you'll do a network update to put the full distro on your hard drive.

It's a nice option, actually, because you'll have all the most current updates when it's all said and done.

/I haven't seen a CD that wasn't 700MB in ages. Time to go shopping for some new media??
