I have a friend that wants to put an OS on his PS3. I suggested Ubuntu for all its various reasons. I just wondering if this is possible. I have heard of Windows going on a PS3 and thought it would be possible with Ubuntu. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Yes you can put Ubuntu on a Playstation 3. I have it running on mine right now.

Tell your friend to check out this wiki. It might help him out.

http://psubuntu.com/wiki/InstallationInstructions

ISO for PS3 (Ubuntu): http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/8.10/release/ubuntu-8.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso

ISO for PS3 Xfce (Xubuntu): http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/ports/releases/intrepid/release/xubuntu-8.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso

I perfer Xubuntu due to the PS3 only having 512 MB of RAM. Its faster and more lightweight. Have fun!

P.S. Your friend might have heard of my hacker alias due to all my software development projects for the Playstation 3. :lolflag: :lolflag:

If he needs the nVIDIA drivers running on the PS3 for (X)Ubuntu, he can email me at neotheuser@ymail.com so he can get direct rendering and 3d acceleration running on the Playstation 3. I can't post a guide here on how to do it on the forums since Sony might come knocking on my door.

Best Regards!
