anyone else using it in ubuntu? i have installed it already, and just need to know what i need to uninstall in order to remove the gnome desktop environment and all the other stuff that gets pulled in (presumably what makes gnome a 'desktop environment', vice just a wm).

thanks,
chris

i don't think to many still use it, fluxbox is better and more up-to-date, the last release of blackbox was in 2005(http://blackboxwm.sourceforge.net/), linux moves fast and there have been a lot of changes on the system level, so you might experience more bugs than in other wm's.

trying to remove gnome is like pulling teeth, just use synaptic to
locate the gnome-* packages and remove them, just to let you know it could break your install.

most of us start from the ground and work up.

I don't know, I think Black Box is alright. I still use it from time to time when I need to do some sort of work, though Open Box is better in my opinion.

You could try this to remove gnome packages. Since you won't have KDE or XFCE I don't know what vital system process will not have programs to interface after you do this. I run Xubuntu with the fluxbox window manager and like how speedy it is. I still have a lot of gnome things running as well though.

thanks for the replies. i, too prefer to start from the ground up, and in fact, would be running debian lenny via netinst if i could have gotten my network card working...thanks for the link, that's a much more familiar install process for me. i know blackbox is old, but it's what i am used to, and there are maybe one or two bugs (at least in debian), but for what i need out of it (extremely light wm), it's perfect.
