View Full Version : [ubuntu] upgraded Intrepid hangs on I/O wait

Hi everyone--

I just finally "upgraded" my girlfriend's old Thinkpad T30 from Hardy to Intrepid, and it's been a disaster. I find that something is causing all I/O to hang for long periods of time (5-10 minutes). During these hangs, the "top" command shows ~98% of the CPU in the "waiting" state (that's what "WA" means, no?), but I have yet to figure out how to find the bad process.

It happens mostly when launching apps. Bringing up Firefox, for example, takes 5-10 minutes. During this time, the mouse will move, but nothing is responsive to interaction -- no menus, no already-open applications, nothing. Once the app starts, it works fairly well, until something else needs to launch, at which point it's another 10 minute wait.

Does anyone have any ideas, or should I just backup her user folder and start from scratch in Hardy?

Thanks in advance!

(bump -- this fell off the front page in less than an hour!)
