Is it possible to move a persistent usb install ( including my customizations) from the live USB to a normal install on a hard drive?
Basically, when I click install, will I get the standard install or will it use the casper-rw file which has my additions?
what about remastersys?

Not as far as I am aware.
If you create a CD with remastersys, the resulting install on a HD will install the software, but no settings. I expect the same would apply to a USB type install.

hmm, maybe I could go with a "backup" utility and restore it - but that would only work on the same hardware, I would think.
oh well, I just thought it would be a neat idea to have a "set-up" live environment that I could have and deploy on a wide variety of hardware

You could use Puppy Linux. It is small in size & when used from a live CD you can save your settings. You can also get it to boot from a USB stick if you wish.
Runs very well. I think it will save your settings to a writable CD, but can't really remember.
