newb can't run synaptic packages

hey, I've installed getlive and gotmail in synaptic, and now I can't figure out how to access them, I may be a newb but shouldn't they appear in the applications menu? I've looked and I can't find them.
so what's to be done?

Not every app that you installed would have an icon in the Applications menu. Try running it from a terminal and see what happens. If it works, you can edit and add it to your menu or create a launcher on the upper panel.
