View Full Version : Staff avatars

Perhaps there is already a thread explaining all of this, and if this is so, you have my permission to merge my post into that thread and tell me how stupid I am.

Why is it that all of the staff are either wearing the 'Clippy' avatar or the Microsoft Search dog (I forget his name) as an avatar? There must be some logic behind this.

Every time I see Clippy, without fail, I always think of that nasal voice from "The Matrix Runs on Windows."

It looks like you're trying to bend a spoon with your mind! Can I help you with that?

There may or may not be a theme going on...feel free to join in if you can figure out exactly what that may or may not be if it is indeed happening

Cryptic enough?

Well then, lets forbid Canonical from using Linux like we did Novell. :P

There is no common theme among the staff, I don't know what you're talking about and I resent the implication. It should be no surprise to you that so many people show their support for the office assistants. After all, these animated characters (like clippit) are some of the most useful things to ever come from any software company. They provide relevant context-sensitive help without ever getting in the way. It's absurd that anyone would think there's some kind of pattern here. We all just love MS Office Assistants!

Ugh... I feel like I need a shower after typing all that. I was literally cringing writing some of it.

THERE IS NO PATTERN TO THE STAFF AVATARS. Do not believe what you read.

It looks like you're trying to find a pattern in the staff avatars. Would you like some help with that?

give up, while you still retain some sanity?
join in with whatever it is you think you are observing?
post a metaphysical didactic on the topic?

Merlin was my best friend back in the day. He was so cool. At the time, I was amazed at how they could write a program that was so "smart."

Yeah, programming it on VB, coupled with predefined voice commands was really cool back then. :)

Well, like many things in life, it's not 100% pure logic, but there is an explanation.

It's some sort of emotional, group-dynamical spring cleaning. It's spring, and there's a new ubuntu release coming up, so this avatar thing is a way for the staff to gear up and get in the mood and gather their strenghts after a long dark winter with an abundance of forum-related trouble, both in hard-, soft- and wetware.

The choice of clippy as a common theme is in celebration of their roll on the forums : always there, often invisibly lurking in the background, ready to pop up with help and guidance whenever (they feel) the needs arises. Also not unlike with the real microsoft paperclip, the users (forum menbers) are often rather less than enthusiastic with their interventions ...
