After attempting to run Vista and Windows 7 and both taking up massive resources on my modest rig I was referred to XUbuntu.

So I downloaded the .iso installer unpacked it and ran the installer, rebooted and Windows 7 still booted. No big deal, copied Ubuntu to flash drive and tried to boot from that, did not register, went to the Ubuntu folder in my c: and tried to get it working from there to no avail.

Help would be much appreciated.

sounds to me like you have a grub issue.. try reinstalling grub from your xubuntu disc

Yeah, my Grub folder is empty. So I just reinstall everything, or how would I just install the grub portion?

If you're trying to install Ubuntu to your harddrive then you need to burn the iso file you downloaded to a cd. Then you boot from the cd to install. There's no "unpacking" of the iso involved. Burn the file as a image to a cd.

Do I absolutley need to boot from a CD? I don't have any on hand at the moment (I know they're dirt cheap). Is there ANY way to boot from a flash drive? Or just off the .iso file?

You can boot from a flash drive. Here is a link to some instructions. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick
