Computer from 1999! Bet it doesn't have enough RAM to boot from the LiveCD/desktopCD (not even close). How much RAM does it have anyway? Knowing the amount of RAM, you can pick the right distro, something that is real light on system resources, for your old computer.

With only 192MB of RAM, try using the Xubuntu alternate CD to install on it or something even lighter like Damn Small Linux.

Xubuntu should do an acceptable job on 192MB.

By applications you mean Xubuntu and something else? No, just go with Xubuntu.

Providing your hard disk is large enough (20 GB at least!) and you have lots of free disk space in your W98 installation (10 GB at least!) You can install Xubuntu along side W98.
