lost LVM meta data

I upgraded an old system from Fedora to Ubuntu and didn't backup my data, specifically the lvm configuration.

Now I have a new Ubuntu install but I can't mount the LVM partition. I'm trying testdisk now to see if I can just recover the data. Am I up sh*t creek without a paddle?

A bit more detail, please. Is lvm installed under Ubuntu? Can you use the lvm commands (like vgs, lvs, etc).
