For a clock & Calendar I would suggest Rainlendar:

That's simply a question of what you like most.
Common applications used for this purpose are Screenlets, Conky, gDeskets, gkrellm and aDesklets, but there are plenty of more available. It's also possible to add monitors for all these as panel applets, or create borderless, transparent terminal windows on desktop and use command-line programs to display the information inside them.
If you ask me, the coolest desktop clock/calendar is Wallpaper Clock, which is supported in Linux as a Screenlet: http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaperclock/
