Compiz Troubles

I've been googling for a while now and can't figure out the solution to my problem. I just installed Compiz and have been trying to get it working, but when I try to change my appearance preference to custom it keeps going back to extra. I'm really stumped on how to turn this guy on. Anyone else seen this happening before?

Compiz works with any of the visual effects except "none". Try changing to other effects and see, you could try installing "simple-ccsm" in synaptics, How are you trying to start compiz? Have you installed Fusion-icon? You could go to sytem->preferences->compiz config settings Manger.
Can you provide more information with some screen shots if possible.
