press alt+f2, type gnome-terminal.

then type this command in the terminal:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

copy the output of that command and paste it here.

alternatively, open nautilus and go to /etc/apt.

open sources.list with gedit or any other text editor.

copy and paste the contents of the file here.

sources.list is the list of sites from where your system gets its software.so if the problem is because of absence or error in the site, the installation may fail.so just the output of the file and we can see what we can do.what are u trying to install by the way?because update via terminal is easy.

If you prefer using the gui rather then the terminal, you should be able to open Software Sources (System>Admin>Software Sources) and on the 1st tab untick the box next to "cdrom with Ubuntu 8.04 'Hardy Heron'" then close software sources and reload the list. Then try update manager again.
