Putting Ubuntu old lap top.

For the last few days I've been trying to put Ubuntu on to an old lap top. The thing is I just cant get it to boot up. I run Ubuntu on both my desktops with no problem. Yet when I try to install on the old lap top it just crashes all the time. I managed to put Antix on but am wanting to stick Ubuntu on it as i'm going to give it to some on who's never used Linux before.

The live disk works fine as I have checked it on my desktop but it just doesn't want to boot up on my old lap top.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.
:O)

For old hardware I'd definitely recommend antiX, CrunchBang, or Xubuntu--depending on just how ghetto the hardware actually is.
