I've recently found that my Firefox web browser (version 3.0.6) is unable to run Java applets. So, I decided to click the button that pops up in the yellow banner at the top of the page that says, "Install Missing Plugins...".
I get a dialog, which displays the following 5 plug-ins, in order:
The IcedTea Web Browser Plugin
GCJ Web Browser Plugin
The IcedTea Web Browser Plugin
The Java(TM) Plug-in, Java SE 6
The Java(TM) Plug-in, Java SE 5.0
After I installed all of them, the Java applet still does not display on the page. Then, to make sure the applet was not the problem, I created my own test applet, with simple code that compiled with no errors/warnings. After I tried to run it, Firefox said that Java plugins are not installed.
I'm running on Ubuntu 8.10
