Like a fool, after days of work getting my Brother MFC5490cn to work perfectly with Ubuntu 8.10, printer, scanner, document feeder the whole works, I accepted the most recent upgrades to the cups system and now nothing works. Ubuntu cannot connect to the printer and I cannot figure out how to get it to do so. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and fiddled with everything else I can think of. I'm using the brothers drivers: mfc5490cnlpr-1.1.2-2.i386.deb, mfc5490cncupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.deb and brscan3-0.2.5-2.amd64.deb
First of all, does anyone know how to get the system to connect to the (or any) printer? Or, how do I uninstall the cups busted up "upgrades"? And secondly, why does this happen? How can you release something that breaks an already functioning system?

Help would be greatly appreciated, as I have several things I must get printed today. Need I go back to (shudder) Windows?
