whats so great about elive!? the last time i checked it didnt even have a compositing window manager for it by default. please tell me what all the hype is about.

Try it and see for yourself...

And yes, it does have compositing, but you must switch it on yourself.

Elive is meant to ease the pain of trying to install e17 on top of Ubuntu by including all the necessary ingredients for a stable working desktop.

All you need for compositing is xcompmgr which can be enabled pretty easily. Not sure if you can use Compiz under e17 though.
