I'm coming from the Windows world of Active Directory, access lists, domains, authentication, home folders, shares etc. but I really do want to learn more about the Linux way of doing things. I can set-up a complete basic Windows server and client environment in an hour or so but my lack of knowledge around even Unix is a big hurdle to doing the same thing on Ubuntu. If somebody asked me the same question about Windows, I'd point them at a book like this:

Does anyone have a recommendation for something similar in the Linux/Ubuntu world? Or am I barking up completely the wrong tree? For example, does Linux even have the concept of "joining a domain"?

Cheers, Rob.

Something else that would be useful is a comparison of terms and technologies between Windows and Linux. For example, what's the Linux equiv. of group policies, the registry, INI files etc.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi

Hope you are notified of replies even though it's a long time since you posted.
I unfortunately don't have an answer for you. But I would like to know if you found any books or other useful information as I am pursuing the ubuntu world as well, and would like to try to deploy a small office network with ubuntu only machines (both servers and desktop).

Best regards
/Anders:)
