Hi,

I'm running hardy on a compaq presario v2000. Today my computer froze and when I restarted it, it froze during the boot. The boot loader works fine, but when I boot to ubuntu (safe or otherwise) the computer stops on the "Starting Up..." screen. I'm dual booting with windows XP. This won't boot either giving the message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

When I insert the live CD, it begins to boot and stops on a screen that says ubuntu and in the upper left corner of the screen (Takes up about a sixth of the screen) is a white bordered box. It looks something like this

That didn't quite format right but the box has all the right information.
