I'm tired of messing with Windows Vista's updates that don't work properly. The only reason I'm still on Windows is because it came with the computer (no extra work required installing a new OS) and it's aesthetically pleasing.

Show me your best screenshots of your linux-based desktop and tell me what you installed to get it that way.

Also, explain how much time you've spent to get your linux install up and running the way you like it. Also elaborate on any problems you have that you cannot yet solve.

There is a whole monthly screenshot thread (February right now) so why don't you look around in there for some nice screenshots.

I dont like vista's look at all. I feel they went overboard trying to make it look 'nice'.
I love the transparency of vista but not the design. I prefer simple and minimal.

So here's an example of my desktop at the time I read this thread:

http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/7364/screenshot1.th.jpg (http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/7364/screenshot1.jpg)

Applications open:

Video player
Imageviewer

Minimized windows:

Msn convos (their avatars are shown in dock on right hand side).
Music player (album art shown in dock).

Misc:

Global Menu (Mac style menus)
Avant-window-navigator (Dock)

Trust me when it comes to aesthetics linux, in my opinion, is capable of doing so much more than windows and mac. Its very customizable. I was an avid customizer/themer in windows but eventually left when I discovered what I could do in linux.

About how much time I spent? Alot. I love designing so naturally I spent alot of time on it. You dont have to though, just download a theme and install it.

Problems? Well I havent had many real problems. The only issue with my current transparent desktop is that RGBA (transparency in the windows) isnt fully implemented yet, so I had to manually add it to the applications. Its not super hard, but its not easy for begginers.

If I can find it I'll post a screen of the old non-transparent theme I made.

I prefer a more professional look, but I do like a few bells and whistles. Everything is either in Ubuntu, or from gnome-look:

here's my current shot of linux mint 6 (based on ubuntu 8.10).

installed compiz and emerald, and lassekongo's GTK and emerald themes from deviantart.

little conky setup there at the bottom, and of course the gnome2-globalmenu (the mac-style menu bar), it just saves soo much valuable screen estate.

can't really say how long it took me to setup, since i'm never done, there's always something else to do, like right now i'm working on the tray, i want all-white icons, like the one for pidgin on the left :D
but the basic setup until i felt somewhat comfortable - 1 hour or so?

i think kubuntu kde 4.2 desktop is great looking. in some ways its even better looking than vista imo. i like how you can flip through different desktops via a sphere a cylinder or a box.

Here is a screenshot for you. Obviously, VISTA CAN'T TOUCH THIS! This is with Compiz Config Settings Manager, Avant Window Navigator, and Mac4Linux Theme installed.
