I get this error message when I run the Upgrade Manager for 8.1.

>> Error during update

A problem occurred during the update. This is usually some sort
of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

You have to remove all third parties from your repos before attempting an upgrade. Including the Medibuntu Folder
