GRUB Error 21 after install Ubuntu 8.10 onto second hard drive

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 onto a second ATA hard drive using "Guided - use entire disk" and selecting "SCSI1(0,1,0) (sdb) 250.1 GB ATA ST..." I have Windows XP home on the first hard drive. I was expecting the installation to automatically detect XP and set up a dual boot selection, instead I get this screen:

I repeated the installation and got the same result. I am completely new to Linux. This is my first attempt at an installation. I will greatly appreciate any help.

Have you tried the super grub disk yet it always helps me when i get this error. But I have never tried over two hard drives.

I am not familiar with the Super Grub disk, but I will look into it.

I think it would help to first get a clearer picture of your setup related to booting, so how about downloading the Boot Info Script to the Live CD desktop:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Then open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and do:

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh
That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of the RESULTS.txt file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound/hash sign "#" graphic button in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what the solution to your booting problem might be.

It looks like you might have problems with your BIOS recognizing the Ubuntu sdb drive, because a Grub error 21 is "selected disk does not exist"; even though Grub is installed to the MBR of your sda drive and points to the 2nd boot drive, you shouldn't get that Grub error since you only have two drives. How about trying this:


sudo apt-get install lilo
sudo lilo -M /dev/sda mbr
sudo grub
grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> makeactive
grub> setup (hd1)
grub> quit

Then reboot, set your BIOS to boot the sdb drive, and let me know exactly what happens. We can work from there.

Congratulations caljohnsmith! Your advice was right on. After you opined that the problem was in the BIOS, I fiddled with the settings and got it to properly recognize the second hard drive. After that, the GRUB menu came up perfectly and the options for XP and Ubuntu got the respective systems to boot with no problems.

Dealing with the glitch has been a blessing in disguise. After being discouraged by encountering a problem right off the bat, being forced to seek help from the "community" and getting it so efficiently has reinforced my commitment to being a full-time Ubuntu user and encouraging others to do so. Thank you for the excellent introduction to Linux and the way the Linux community works.
