synaptic package manger intrepid

Hello,
I installed updates last night (18th Feb) and now synaptic won't open. Tried 'sudo apt-get update' but get message 'sudo belongs to.....'
Can send log if required.
I was adding text data to music tracks in K3B at the time of download/installation.
I'm using intrepid 386 desktop.
Grateful for assistance.
