I found a tutorial on how to make a server out of xubuntu. but its for 7.04.

http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/06/05/build_your_own_server/6

for the vnc part to type in the terminal

crzyone9584@crzyone9584-desktop:~$ vncpasswd ~/.vnc/passwd
The program 'vncpasswd' can be found in the following packages:
* tightvncserver
* vnc4-common
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
bash: vncpasswd: command not found

I get errors for all that terminal input any suggestions? I'm going to get the whole tutorial to work eventually.

I dont think you need to do that. There is a WIKI Howto page for Ubuntu that probably explains how to use the "already included" remote desktop control panel... blah blah. Your re-inventing the wheel when you dont have to.

to my knowledge xubuntu doesn't come with a remote desktop installed. hence the following the tutorial.

Generally, with this kind of thing you first look for howtos on the net, in various sites. (im not sure where the xubuntu howtos are):

http://www.ubuntuhq.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_Howtos
http://www.howtoforge.com/howtos/linux/ubuntu

For your issue though I think the standard procedure is to follow the howto here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=383053
