I'd like to remove the Applications | Places | System panel in Ubuntu. I know how, but what I'd like to be able to do is (similar to Fluxbox) right-click on my desktop and see the Applications menu (Accessories, Games, Graphics etc.).

Is this possible? If so, how can I do it (and in case you are wondering, no I'm not looking for the nautilus-actions thing, because I'm hoping I don't have to manually add an application one by one).

Thanks!!

I don't know how you'd do it in gnome, but Xfce does this by default and it is a pretty good desktop environment.
