Alright sort of a windows issue but because I need the help and other OS talk is closed and I dont know a good decent windows forum I need help.
Alright on my second computer with windows XP the defragmentation app... well its gone, no reason its just gone.
I need a replacement for it as my husband does use this XP computer a lot for work.
For his home desktop he has gone full linux but his work laptop has both Ubuntu and a slowly dieing XP.
This is the latest thing to go, he really needs a NTFS defragger but he needs it to be free too...
I think he would appreciate it if you helped us out, by the way is there a NTFS defragger that can run under linux even if its on wine?
He asked that one too as he can see XP just giving up entirely and he wont be able to use it at all on his work computer, but he has a lot of files for work on that computer, we have an external but he needs at least the XP core system for his job.
He is very close to running XP in virtualbox, I can tell you that tough and just using the NTFS partition as a secondary but he still needs XP in some shape or form.

I recommend a program called Defraggler (http://www.defraggler.com). It's a neat little app and seems to do a better job than Windows default, as well as allowing you to fine tune the settings more.

JKDefrag & IOBit offer decent solutions. All of the choices in the link are freeware.

i have a command line program for windows that does a decent job of defragging windows. It basically does it as perfect as it can get (it cant be perfect because the page file and system files cannot be moved around on the hard disk) but other then that, its a great little program. I'll upload it later.

Also, for great free windows tools in general, check out www.techsupportalert.com

It's basically a one stop shop for free windows apps.

I've used diskeeper lite and it is good. I however see there are some new kids on the block they rate higher.

The above site is excellent for recommendations on Windows Freeware, bookmark it!

Let me put a different spin on the original topic, if you don't mind ...

Anybody know of a good Linux program that will defrag a mounted NTFS partition?

as far as defragging on windows... you could try Auslogics Defrag...

http://www.auslogics.com/en/software

I've used it and it seems to do a better job than the Windows built in version. Also, try going to a command prompt in windows and typing
defrag C:

That should start the windows defragger from the command prompt. (if the defrag.exe file still exists)
