Over a few day's time, I've been wrestling with Java on 7.10 Ubuntu. I can't upgrade just yet.

But I'm cutting right to the chase. Desperately, I downloaded and installed:
Java Web Start 1.4
Sun Java 5.0 Web Start
Sun Java 6 Web Start

...And I switched between them using this in Terminal:
sudo update-alternatives --config java
But my test applet, Runescape, only turned white and said: error loading applet.
I also tried downloading IcedTea Java Web Start, but when I try to open it, it says: Failed to execute child process "usr/lib/jvm/java-7-icedtea/bin/javaws" (no such file or directory)

HELP!:(
