properly using a preseed file

I've been trying to use a preseed file hosted on a network to install kubuntu. I have thus far been unsuccessful in actually getting the installer to use it. I know that the file is accessible to any machine connected to the internet, but the installer seems to be ignoring my directive to use it. Can someone who has had success with this in the past post some instructions? I'm using the alternate install CD, and have tried placing the parameters in several places on the bootline, none of which seem to make a difference. Any ideas?
