I've seen a number of install problem posts, but none seem quite like mine. I installed 8.10 from the Ubuntu-pressed live CD on my plain-vanilla 32-bit desktop machine. The install went fine. When I booted, I ended up with a blank dark screen. I have reinstalled one more time and have toggled into interactive mode (Ubuntu seems to be there), checked the CD and memory (both OK). Right now I have a beige-colored variant of a blank screen (mouse cursor that works, otherwise nada); not sure how I get black vs. beige. Any suggestions on what to try/check?

Update: I have solved my problem--I borrowed CentOS install CDs from a bud to get some kind of system back, then I downloaded U 8.04, burned the CD, and installed it. It works fine. I have to say, though, that I am disappointed on 2 counts: First, the Ubuntu-pressed CD was a lemon (I assume since CentOS and 8.04 both installed no problem), and second that no-one could offer any help in the past 2 weeks on this.
