Hello, I am fairly new to Ubuntu, and am having issues getting Ubuntu 64 bit setup. I ran the installation twice, and a message popped up saying a file couldn't be found, but I clicked retry and install continued (I assume it found the file when it searched again). When I try to boot into ubuntu, the login screen comes up fine, but after logging in it takes me to a blank screen, all I see is the wallpaper. On my first boot attempt the restricted drivers message popped up, but there is no status bar at the top of the screen. I have an intel quad core processor, is this distro only compatible with AMD processors?

I hope someone understands what I am trying to say. Thanks!!!

Eric

Make sure you have a good CD.
Try 'Safe Graphics' (F4)

I had an old disk, and figured that was the issue. reburnt at 2x, same problem, and it booted fine from live cd.

Maybe its not a 64bit disc?

Try re-downloading.

What file did it say was missing?
You can also Check cd for defects at the start

its definitels 64 bit disk, I can't remember what file it said was missing. it seems that the system is installed fine, but when I login I just get a blank screen with the default wallpaper. I have run the checks from the recovery mode, and it says everything is ok. very puzzling.

When the login screen pops up, select options in the lower left corner and select your session and stuff. that might help

I tried the xclient script, it gave me what looked like a 2 bit color screen, gnome is the default, which doesnt' work either, and the other options didn't help either. :(

That is strange! Have you tried changing settings in your BIOS?

I don't really know what settings I could adjust to fix the problem...maybe i'll just go back to 32 bit.

Oh, is your computer a 64bit processor?

I have AMD and no problems what so ever.
I thought Intel was the i386 version

It's a 64 bit quad core, I would think there shouldn't be any issue.

actually, the failsafe terminal works, but being new to linux I don't know any commands to fix the problem

"I have an intel quad core processor, is this distro only compatible with AMD processors?"

No, 64-bit Ubuntu will run on either AMD or Intel 64-bit processors.

Did you run 'Check CD for defects' or md5sum on the CD?
