Never knew netbook prices have fallen so much .. Dell mini 9 with Ubuntu 8.04.1 for 199$:

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=DNDOXZ1&cs=19&dgvcode=ss&c=US&l=EN&m_3=2GB62&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=566643&acd=10495476-1371119-

I am really tempted to buy now. Thought this might help some netbook shoppers.

yeah and you get 512 mb RAM and a 4gb solid state hdd.
I wouldn't pay 199 for that.

512 MB/4GB

I think that's to prevent people from trying to install Windows on them. :P

Keep 'em coming.

Man, I wish I could get a netbook to replace my clunky old laptop. lol.

But I just can't afford it :(

But it's only an extra $100 to make it 2GB of ram and an 8GB SSD.

Ubuntu based netbook? Not a half baked custom distro like HP's? I'd go for it.

Nice...

But the default configuration is useless, unless you just want to chat and check mails.

Enjoy!

it is still poorly implemented. last update broke a LOT of people's systems. vanilla 8.10 is better than dell 8.04..... and all the hardware works OOB so you lose nothing.

It's not a bad idea to buy a 512 MB / 4 GB Dell Mini 9 and upgrade the RAM and SSD yourself. You can upgrade it to 2 GB RAM for cheap (about $25 or so) and you can get a 16, 32 or 64 GB replacement SSD from RunCore which is much faster than the SSD that Dell puts in the Mini 9.

I've ordered a Mini 9 myself; Dell finally offers it here in the Netherlands. I don't know why it took Dell so long to start selling them here. Unfortunately they sell them only with Windows XP here. I intend to put Ubuntu 8.10 on it.

Instead of netbooks, i would go for msi megabook vr201 which is around 300$-350$ here.
1.9kg with 6 cell battery, everything works out of the box except atheros wifi(but it is easy to get it working), it is wayyyyy faster than a netbook. You can also replace the battery and get 8 cell battery with 5-6 hr battery time.my 2 cents

Dang, when I bought my Mini two months ago it was $500 for 1GB of RAM and a 32GB SDD (plus everything) - now, I can get 2/64 for 470?

This price is only until tomorrow. It's a President's Day sale Dell is having.
